EMERALD SES are appealing to the wider community in the hopes of raising $5000 for much needed training.
SES medic Sophie Taylor is urging all community members to donate to the volunteer program which will use the money to send six members of the unit to South Australia.
“This (money) will enable us to participate in the 2006 Australasia road crash rescue challenge, giving us a very rare hands-on opportunity to acquire new skills in the extrication of casualties from state-of-the-art vehicles that Holden has kindly donated,” she said in a letter sent to community groups and businesses.
With new cars constantly being introduced to the market, it is important for SES groups to learn the quickest and most effective way to get road accident victims out of the vehicle and to hospital.
The road crash rescue challenge will help the SES to improve its life-saving skills.
“I’m sure you can appreciate that the quicker a person is removed from a motor vehicle after a crash and the sooner they are placed in an ambulance, the greater their chance of a full recovery becomes. It’s for this very reason that we consider this rescue challenge to be a vital part of our training.”
The crew placed second at last year’s challenge in Carrum Downs, Victoria, and believe the experience was invaluable for the team.
“Attending last year’s challenge meant we were able to gain, pass on our knowledge and thus ultimately save lives. No matter how large or small your donation is, we will be truly grateful.”
