THE smell of anticipation was high as players did battle for the August monthly medal as well as for the right to qualify for 16 places in the prestigious Emerald singles match-play championship.
A closely fought struggle between Stewart Courtney and Graham Bates saw both shooting great 68s in the difficult conditions (CCR 68). While Stewart won the day’s B grade honours on a count back both will have to front back in September to play off for the August medal.
A and C grade winners were Ross Martin and Noel Prictor shooting 74 nett respectively. In the B grade, Leigh Morrison shot 70, Greg Haymes 71 and Denis Fuller 73.
On the course Horrocks and Fuller welcomed back the battling Benny Balfour who was in fine form on the par 3s. Ben has recovered well from his recent delicate operation and appreciated his playing partner’s compassion.
Other competitive efforts included 74 – Ken Hill, 74 – Graham White, 74 – Edin Selimovic, 74 – Greg Horrocks and 74 – Andrew Tudor.
Andrew Tudor also took out the monthly medal for July by beating Ben Balfour by a single stroke in the playoff.
Ross Martin won the pro pin on the 18th with a great shot missing the pin only by four feet. Mike Litchfield proved that he is not a one shot wonder by taking out two nearest the pins with closest to the pin with his second shot to the 1st and nearest to the pin on the 12th.
There are some mouth watering head-to-head clashes for the 16 qualifiers with first round clashes to be played by 31 August.
