MONBULK MP James Merlino will work to improve grass roots sports as he steps into his new role of Sports, Recreation and Youth Affairs Minister.
He said he is excited about his new role because he has a passion for sport and is heavily involved in clubs in his electorate.
“I’m very happy and very humbled.
“The focus for the last several months has been the election but I was hopeful if the community gave me a vote of confidence I might possibly be there for further opportunities. That’s happened so I’m very pleased.
Mr Merlino said he will work to improve grass roots sports as well as working with elite sports and athletes.
He also aims to improve female and youth participation in sport.
Mr Merlino said he will work on issues affecting grass roots clubs such as the problem of soccer pitch shortages in the Dandenong Ranges.
“My experience on local council will hold me in good stead to work with local governments and communities to develop grass roots sporting opportunities,” he said.
