MONBULK’S emphatic win over co-leaders Upwey, seems to have finally settled just who is top dog in the YVMDFL… or has it?
Seniors
Monbulk 11.19.85 d Upwey-Tecoma 3.2.20.
THE intervention of foul weather, absent key personnel and the Monbulk oval hoodoo all seemed to work in favour of the Hawks, so some doubts may still linger.
Yet, the comprehensive nature of the win cannot be ignored. Monbulk prevailed from the outset, with only their inaccuracy denying them a repeat of the whitewash they inflicted on Upwey last season.
Driven by onballers Vin Dunstan and Shannon Koole, Monbulk attacked incessantly – peppering the goal with gay abandon, but woeful accuracy, to emerge victors by an impressive 65 points. Monbulk’s water-tight defence had restricted Upwey to a single behind for almost three quarters, while the Hawks plundered the goals to win by 65 points.
Goals: Tolliday, Dunstan 3, Comfort 2.
Best: S. Koole, V. Dunstan, J. Fraser, M. Mullinder, T. Wragg.
Reserves
Monbulk 10.11.71 d Upwey-Tecoma 2.9.21.
THE Hawks sent a message to the undefeated Upwey and then signed off with a meritorious 50-point win over the ladder leaders.
After the Tigers had humiliated the Hawks in round three, Monbulk were primed to exact revenge. Taking control early in the match, the Hawks really opened up after half time with Langworthy a focal point up forward. Ravenhorst controlled the wings while Jon ‘The General” Reid directed proceedings up forward.
Goals: Langworthy 4, Ravenhorst, Reid 2.
Best: Langworthy, Reid, Mullinder, Ravenhorst, Liebe.
Under 18
Upwey- Tecoma 6.5.41 d Monbulk 2.3.15.
MONBULK had chances in the early minutes and led Upwey to the ball, but could not convert the chances. The commitment of the Hawks was commendable in the conditions and sometimes you need to beat bad luck as well as the opposition.
Goals: C. Waldron, S. Weiring.
Best: T. Seamer, B. Burke, M. Coen, C. Gray, D. Petersen.
Netball
DESPITE a dramatic recovery, the A Grade girls suffered their first defeat of the year at the hands of contenders, Upwey.
The cold and wet conditions seemed to affect the Hawkettes when Upwey raced to a telling eight-goal lead in the opening quarter. Monbulk fought back to win the next three-quarters, led by the consistent Mel Whitworth and Bec McCormick, but just failed to overtake the Tigresses lead.
The Hawks retain their coveted top position despite going down 15 to 18.
Goals: A. Beaton, J. Sands 7.
Best: M. Whitworth, B. McCormick, K. Wragg, K. Utting.
In another nail-biter, the B Grade sneaked away with a close-fought victory over Upwey, taking the lead in the early in the game, then holding out the Tigers in the final quarter to win by a solitary goal, 22 to 21. Kim White and Hilary Gilbert are proving to be the backbone of the side and they got great support from Gemma Pearson and young Bronwyn Griffiths.
Goals: E. Mullinder 13, C. Seamer 6, K. Mitchell 3.
Best: K. White, H. Gilbert, G. Pearson, B. Griffiths.
