Shelters on show

KNOX City Council last week signed a deal that will see its network of almost 300 bus shelters being overhauled at no cost to ratepayers.
The agreement between the council and the Department of Infrastructure (DOI) will mean that most – if not all – of Knox’s bus shelters would be replaced with new structures over the next decade.
The deal will hand over responsibility for the installation, maintenance and cleaning of the shelters to the DOI. In return, the DOI will be allowed to use 60 per cent of the new shelters for advertising.
The council said it was keen to make sure that many of the shelters are decorated with community artwork.
“If we want to encourage our community to reduce their reliance on cars and use public transport, then we need to provide them with safe and comfortable shelter,” he added.
