Ben Higgs, owner of Olinda’s Wild Oak cafe restaurant and wine bar, last week announced that all profits form his Anzac Day sales will go to the Upwey-Belgrave RSL which is facing financial hardship. “I must admit it came as a bit of a shock,” said Upwey-Belgrave RSL president Dennis Moffart.
It was a press report that first drew Mr Higgs attention to the RSL’s financial trouble and it was then he decided to help.
“After reading that they were struggling financially at the moment, it just got me thinking,” Mr Higgs said.
“Anzac Day can be quite a lucrative public holiday for many restaurants in the hills but I feel I needed to contribute to this on a bigger, more significant level.”
Anzac Day has always been important to Mr Higgs whose grandfather served with the RAAF during World War II.
“It’s always been pretty special to me.”
