Standing up for equity

THOUSANDS of Hills people stood up to make poverty history.
Students from Upwey, Tecoma, Sherbrooke, Monbulk and Emerald took part in a world wide effort to make a Guinness world record for the most people to stand up for a cause.
People across the hills stood up between 8pm on Sunday, 15 October and 8pm on Monday, 16 October for one minute to show support for the end of extreme poverty.
Kallista Make Poverty History (MPH) campaigner Kathy Tyler said the stand-up in the hills was a great success with more than 2625 people taking part.
She said the stand-up aims to put pressure on the world finance leaders to cancel unpayable debts, make trade rules fair and make aid better by focusing on the needs of the very poor.
Overall a massive 23 million people stood up in 87 countries which included 11 million in Australia.
A spokesman from the Guinness World Records called the stand-up the largest single coordinated movement of people in the history of the world records.
The campaign will continue next month with a family poverty expo being held at Ruby’s in Belgrave on Sunday, 12 November.
