Upwey-Tecoma routs leader Mulgrave

By Tania Martin
UPWEY-Tecoma’s Division Six bowls side strengthened their chances of a top-table finish by season’s end, by defeating top of the ladder Mulgrave Country Club last Saturday on their home greens at the Alexander Avenue Sporting Complex.
Outstanding performances by Peter Jeffery and Neil Thurling in the Colin Benson-skipped rink, plus the good form shown by Ken Gray in his elevated position of third to Benson was the feature of the day’s play.
The 32 shots up drubbing of their opponents by this team would rank as one of the best performances by an Upwey-Tecoma team so far this season.
Relevant newcomer to the sport, Jeffery showed outstanding form by continually putting two bowls within centimetres of the jack to completely demoralise his opponent.
Thurling showed a welcome return to form by getting the majority of his bowls into the head, whilst Gray consistently took opponents bowls out of the contest.
With skip Benson also in fine form with his draw shots, this team thoroughly deserved their rink of the week award.
Playing at home, the third side also recorded a good win against Heatherdale.
Playing his first game in the Saturday pennant, Brendan Ford showed promise as did Georgette Button and Leigh Robinson in the George Simons skipped rink, which finished with a 14-shots up win.
Not to be outdone Ron Meers and his team of Gavin Malane, Terry Button and Gretal Kornow finished on strongly in a hard-fought match to win with 8 shots up.
The Division Three side suffered a disappointing loss to the strong Waverley Golf Bowls Club at Waverley.
The Upwey-Tecoma players had trouble in mastering the tricky greens and allowed their opponents to get an early lead which they were unable to peg back.
Results
Division 3: Upwey-Tecoma lost to Waverley Golf Bowls Club 82-102.
Division 6: Upwey-Tecoma d Mulgrave Country Club 138-79.
Roamers: Upwey-Tecoma d Heatherdale 50-28.
