Community called out

UPWEY Country Fire Authority is desperately seeking new volunteers to strengthen its existing 35member brigade, but has warned the community that fire fighting is a big commitment.
Fire captain Peter Marke said last week the brigade needed more volunteers to ensure an appropriate response team of five or six people could attend incidents.
“We want to secure that level of response.
“We have had daytime calls where only two or so fire fighters were in town at the time.”
Capt. Marke said that in situations like those, mutual aid is critical.
Therefore the nearest neighbouring brigade will also have to respond to the call.
He said there would be a number of expectations upon new volunteers.
“They will need to undertake minimum skills training as is the case for all new fire fighters.
“They will eventually enter the same burning buildings and don the same protective gear for chemical and other hazardous incidents.
“They will be expected to leave birthday parties and graduations at a moment’s notice to respond to calls.
“They also do not get paid except in the pride of serving their community.
“The pay isn’t any worse than a generation ago, and long term members will tell you the community pride that helps lure volunteers hasn’t waned.”
Capt. Marke said the brigade was particularly interested in volunteers who worked night shift so they could attend daytime incidents.
But he said Wednesday mornings and Sunday mornings were necessary to attend for training purposes.
