Golf course official on par for top award

By Angela Ivey
FERNTREE Gully resident Mark Jennings has been named as a finalist in the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association (AGCSA) Awards, just for doing a great job.
Mark Jennings has been a course superintendent at the Box Hill Golf Club in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for more than 10 years.
Mr Jennings will travel to Brisbane on an all-expenses-paid trip as part of the final judging process for the awards.
Mr Jennings will go up against some stiff competition including Mt Lawley Golf Club superintendent Glenn Cross from Perth and Glenelg Golf Club superintendent Daryl Sellar from Adelaide.
Mr Jennings said he was proud to be nominated for the award but was embarrassed as he felt that he was just doing his job.
Beginning as an apprentice turf manager in Geelong, Mr Jennings said that being a golf club superintendent was something he always wanted to do.
Mr Jennings said nothing will change if he wins the AGCSA award and that he would continue doing his job but would be a proud recipient of the award.
He said he has never entered awards before and was surprised when he was chosen.
“It’s an enjoyable workplace and the club has progressed in 10 years. We will keep going with the improvements,” he said.
The AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management Award will be announced at the 22nd Australian Turfgrass Conference in Brisbane from Monday, 17 July to Friday, 21 July.
