Sherbrooke fails to shine

IT was a disappointing result for the Sherbrooke Suns Division 1 men’s basketball team over the weekend.
In a big double header, Sherbrooke went down in both games 133-126 against Southern Peninsula Sharks and 116-76 against Altona Gators. These results see Sherbrooke slip to 4th on the ladder.
The game against the Sharks was a shootout, with the Suns fighting all game to recover from a 21-point deficit at the end of the first quarter.
To their credit and on the back of David Wilson’s 38 points and 6 rebounds, the Suns took the lead in the third quarter, only to see the Sharks steady with some excellent 3-point shooting and go on to record a hard-fought win.
John Greig with a triple double, 27 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists also shone for the Suns.
Sunday’s game saw a fresher Altona out-muscle the tired looking Suns. Sherbrooke never seemed to get into a rhythm and only Simon Munro with 18 points and Garth Van Noorden 15 points and 7 rebounds, made it into double figures for the Suns.
This week at Monbulk, Sherbrooke takes on Keilor Thunder commencing at 7.45pm.
On a far brighter note, the Division 2 women won both their games, taking care of the Darebin Giants 99-60 and the Altona Gators 82-48. This enables the women to retain second place on the ladder.
Robyn Ladd had an outstanding weekend, picking up both games’ MVPs following her 22 points, 9 rebounds against Darebin with 22 and 12 against the Gators. She was again supported by Rachael Fearon-Brown with 17 and 5, followed by 20 and 3.
Against Darebin, the Suns’ defence was impressive, but against the Gators it moved to a higher level when they restricted the Altona women to just 17 points for the entire second half.
Stephanie Kennett with 17 points and 5 rebounds had a great game against Darebin, whilst Tara Blair with 12 points was the dominant guard against Altona.
This week the women are away to Keilor Thunder on Saturday night.
The Youth League men travelled to Geelong to take on the undefeated Cats on Sunday and took the game right up to the highly-fancied Geelong team for 3 of the 4 quarters.
It was a much-improved performance from the Suns, who had been going through something of a form slump. Geelong proved they are the team to beat this season with a solid 118-100 victory.
For Sherbrooke, Matt Cromarty continued his excellent season with 20 pts, 14 rebounds. David Black returned to form with 17 points, Jake Spruhan had his first double/double with 15 and 12 and Jonathan Ball had 15 pts and 6 rebounds.
The Youth League will be looking to return to the winner’s list with this week’s home game against the Latrobe City Energy commencing at 5.30pm on Saturday.
