KNOX City Council’s six childcare centres are recycling their disposable nappies through MyPlanet.
The change to a greener approach to nappy waste was initiated by childcare staff who contacted MyPlanet to discuss recycling nappies used by the children at its centres.
Councillor Ben Smith, chairman of the council’s Environment Advisory Committee, said: “About 300 nappies fit into a 240 litre bin. Therefore, across the six childcare centres, there are about 1800 nappies diverted from landfill and recycled each week,” Cr Smith said.
It is estimated about 800 million disposable nappies are used each year in Australia enough to fill the MCG and each nappy can take 500 years to decompose.
