WHEN Ferntree Gully resident Rochelle Dennis first volunteered for Starlight Children’s Foundation, she was barely older than many of the sick children supported by the program.
At the age of 15, Rochelle applied for work experience at the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Star Express room because, legally, she wasn’t old enough to be a fully-fledged volunteer.
As Rochelle attests, though, she was certainly old enough to appreciate the intangible reward of a sick child’s defiant grin.
Three years on, Rochelle remains a loyal volunteer for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and will be among 600 Victorian volunteers spreading the word on Starlight Day, Friday, 4 May.
Star volunteers will be selling merchandise and collecting donations at major shopping centres throughout Victoria.
Rochelle says that her experience with the Starlight Express rooms in major hospitals has been truly uplifting.
“Hospitals can be pretty depressing for kids so it’s great to have something to lift their spirits,” she said.
“They really enjoy it because it’s such a contrast to what they normally do.
“There’s lots of games and guests come to see the kids. It’s about having a great time and being somewhere else than in bed.”
Money raised on Starlight Day will support the various services provided by the foundation, including Starlight Fun Centres, Starlight Express Vans, and Starlight Escape and Wishgranting programs.
This year, the foundation has introduced the Star Party program, where people can host their own themed fundraiser events such as a Star-BQ or 5-Star Party.
People interested in getting involved with any of the Starlight initiatives can call 1300 727 827, or register online at www.starlightday.org.au.
Starlight Day stands will be set up at Knox City, Fountain Gate, Stud Park and Endeavour Hills shopping centres.
