New green waste collection service

HILLS people can soon take advantage of a new kerbside green waste collection.
Cardinia Shire Council has awarded the tender to Thiess Services.
A survey conducted in September showed that 65 per cent of people living in the shire supported the introduction of the new waste collection.
The service will not be compulsory and people can choose not to use the kerbside service, which will enable lawn clippings and other material to be left for the council to take away.
David Esmore, shire contract manager, said the green waste collection will cost $1.65 per week.
Request forms will now be sent out to households in the shire advising them of the cost and asking if they want to be included in the service.
Mr Esmore said people need to tell council if they don’t want to use the service otherwise they will receive a new 240-litre bin and will be told when the collections are to commence.
He said the new waste collection will go a long way towards meeting the council’s obligations to reduce waste material in landfill.
“We strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this service as the more households that register, the cheaper the cost will be,” he said.
