Rates ease to reduce squeeze

By Tania Martin
CARDINIA Shire has unveiled a $57 million spending spree as part of its 2008-09 draft budget.
However, hills residents will be pleased to see the lowest rate rise in several years with a modest 5.8 per cent hike.
According to the council, the rise represents an average increase of $1.50 or less per week.
The draft budget, which was released on Monday 12 May, forecasts a record $57 million to be sent on operations, service delivery, capital works and programs across the shire.
Mayor Bill Ronald said the budget sought to ease the squeeze on residents by keeping rates as low as possible.
Some of the key highlights outlined in the budget include funds for new youth, community and recreational facilities.
“This budget invests in areas of importance to residents such as youth services and community facilities…above all, we want to ensure our residents get the best possible value,” Cr Ronald said.
The draft budget is now on display for public comment with copies available by calling 1300 787 624 or by logging onto the shire website at www.cardinia .vic.gov.au.
Residents are now invited to make submissions on the budget which will be considered at a special council meeting on Monday 16 June at 7pm.
