KILSYTH Cobras newest recruit Zach Malvik could be the key to winning the 2008 SEABL men’s title.
The six-foot-two (187cm) US power point guard formerly of Winona State University (WSU) is a force to be reckoned with on the court.
A proven winner, Malvik, led his former team to a 104 to 29 win-loss record including a 57-game winning streak.
He also finished his college basketball career as the leader in games played, and assists and came second for scoring, field goal attempts and field goals made.
With an average of 14.8 points per game, 4.1 assists and 3 rebounds, he also finished his college career as one of the most distinguished players in WSU history.
Malvik is expected to bring a new dimension to the Cobras this year, who were the 2007 SEABL runners’ up.
This power guard’s individual and team awards speak for themselves but his courage is probably one of his most outstanding assets.
Malvik, despite snapping his fibula in the last 15 minutes of the last practice match of the NCAA Division 2 regional finals in 2006, still managed to play in both regional and elite eight finals.
He said although it had been painful playing injured he did it for his team.
“It was very painful, but my team-mates were very supportive, and they wanted me out there giving whatever I could,” Malvik said.
Malvik said he was really excited about taking to the court in Australia.
“We (Cobras) have a good group of guys who I think can be a great team in 2008,” he said.
“SEABL is a great standard of competition and I look forward to the challenge of seeing where I stand.”
Cobras coach Grant Wallace said he was optimistic about the 2008 season and that he was looking forward to getting Malvik on the court with his new teammates.
“The guys have a renewed confidence coming into the 2008 season to go one step better than 2007.”
