EMERALD’S State Emergency Unit is expecting to see a reduction in calls for assistance with the launch of a new statewide number.
In the past 12 months Emerald SES has received 500 calls for help, but from now on there is a single number to call for storm or flood emergencies.
The new number is 132 500 and can be dialled from anywhere in Victoria, 24hours a day, for emergency assistance for those affected by flood or storm.
SES spokesman, Peter Cocks, said this new numbering system was a major step forward for the service.
“With over 100 numbers across the state for SES call outs, it was often difficult for people to identify their local number,” he said.
Mr Cocks said with triple zero (000) unable to take SES calls, establishing a statewide number was the best solution.
Emerald SES controller Gerard Kennedy said when people phone 132 500 their call will automatically be directed to an emergency communications centre, where a trained calltaker will notify the SES unit of the incident.
Mr Cocks said Victoria has adopted 132 500 as the single point of contact for flood and storm emergencies, with the number also being used by New South Wales and South Australian SES units.
Emerald SES has also called for new volunteers from residents between Upper Ferntree Gully, Monbulk and Menzies Creek.
Those interested in joining the Emerald unit can call the state headquarters on 9684 6666 or leave a message at the unit in Emerald on 5968 5449.
