EMERALD Football Club is vying for Premiership contention this year after a disappointing 2006 season.
The club is still in the throes of recruiting new players for the 2007 season, which starts on Saturday, 21 April.
Football manager Darrell Maher said that a number of former players would be returning to the club this season, which will add a touch of competitiveness to the side.
But Maher said the club would like to see more under 18 players come on board.
Peter Ferrari will take on the senior coaching job again this season and has already put the team through its paces working on the players’ skills and running game.
Garry Sewell will again coach the reserves with the help of assistant coach Brand Sands.
“These guys are in their third year at the club and are a great acquisition to the coaching team,” Maher said.
Despite getting ready for an exciting 2007 season, Maher says many potential players and supporters are yet to make their minds up about the club.
“A lot of people are sitting with a wait-and-see attitude but I can assure them that the club is going full steam ahead.”
Maher says the next couple of years will see exciting time both on and off the field with the extension of the clubrooms.
“Progress on the rooms has been a little bit slower than we anticipated but work is set to start soon.”
Training will resume on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.30pm to 8pm from tonight.
Maher said the club is also gearing up for a round of practice matches starting with a game against Nar Nar Goon on Saturday, 24 March.
The second practice match will be against Koo Wee Rup on the Saturday, 31 March.
Both matches will be held at Emerald’s home ground at Chandler Reserve.
Anyone wanting to join the club as a sponsor, player or supporter should contact Darrell Maher on 0403 346 657.
