Generations of long-term health

AUSTRALIAN Medical Association (AMA) Victoria president Dr Mark Yates is calling on Victorians to remember during Family Doctor Week the important role family doctors play in keeping Victorians healthy.
“General practitioners take on an enormous task each year keeping us healthy,” he said.
“In Victoria, general practitioners provided more than 5 million episodes of care, just in the first three months of this year.
“That is substantial when you consider many GPs are forced to juggle patient needs with the increasing demands of running a highly regulated small business.
“GPs carry out a vital but, at times, difficult role. They are committed to caring for their patients’ long-term health and often care for several generations of one family.”
Dr Yates said that Family Doctor Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the key role GPs play in local communities in Victoria and in ensuring Victorians stay healthy.
“Your family doctor is usually your first point of contact if you have any health concerns and, just as importantly, can help ensure you don’t become sick,” he said.
“Having a family doctor is important because it means that person knows your health history, can help with preventative health strategies and follow the progress of treatment.
“It should be a priority to have regular check-ups with your GP, so they can properly monitor your health,” Dr Yates said.
