FERNTREE Gully cricketer James Hall was surprised to have the captaincy bestowed upon him a few years ago.
He says he didn’t think he was the best option.
But then again, humility is often the hallmark of a natural leader.
So it has proved for Hall, 16, who was recently named the inaugural Outer East Regional Junior Leadership Program Award winner.
The young wicketkeeper/batsman was recognised for skippering his team at Johnson Park Cricket Club and the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association representative squad in the Jim Beitzel Shield.
He was singled out from the list of nominations from the region’s 70 clubs.
“I didn’t realise I’d been nominated until they rang to say I’d won,” he said.
Hall’s leadership philosophy is anchored by a desire to create a harmonious on-field atmosphere.
“I think taking the time to get to know the players is really important, and trying to keep everyone relaxed.”
He admits, though, that there are moments when a captain has to put friendships aside.
“It’s hard sometimes when you have to take the ball off a mate, you don’t want to do it, but you have to,” he said.
The leadership program was established as a joint venture between the Outer East Cricket Region, the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union and Knox City Council.
Knox’s Youth Advisory Committee chairperson, councillor Debbie Field said:
“The program aims to help junior cricketers realise the important role they play as leaders of their peers, and encourages them to play the game in a manner adhering to the spirit of cricket.”
Cr Field said the Gully gloveman was a standout choice.
“James is an inspiration for his teammates and the wider community, and I congratulate him on taking a leadership role,” she said.
As part of Hall’s prize, he was the special guest of the Victorian Bushrangers during their match against Western Australia at the MCG earlier this month.
Highlights of his day included eating lunch with the players and umpires, and watching the game from the viewing rooms.
Victorian skipper Cameron White was among those to congratulate him on his award.
But is Hall now convinced that he is the best man for the job?
“I’m a bit more experienced now,” he says.
“I feel like I’m pretty capable.”
