MONBULK Football Club’s division one seniors team has topped off a stellar season taking out the 2005 premiership.
Fighting out a battle of the fittest against Silvan, Monbulk took home its first flag in seven years.
In bad weather conditions, Monbulk’s Hawks opened the first quarter kicking into vicious crosswinds and with rain pelting down on the players, both teams found it difficult to free the ball from the packs.
Hawk Shannon Koole burrowed deep into the packs pulling off possessions to keep Monbulk moving forward.
However, neither side could make headway on the scoreboard.
Silvan started to go forward and could have opened up a telling lead, but poor disposals kept them from scoring.
Monbulk finally broke the drought scoring a goal to take a narrow lead in an even first quarter.
In the second quarter Monbulk continued to drive forward, but met with Silvan’s wall of defence keeping the game on a level playing field. At half time the scoreboard resembled a soccer match with both sides only producing a goal each.
The battle continued in the third quarter, but Monbulk managed to push forward with a handy 11point lead going into the final break.
As the smell of victory drew nearer Monbulk continued to drive hard at the ball.
The final siren saw Monbulk winning the 2005 premiership by 28 points and topping off a stellar season.
Monbulk’s Shannon Koole was awarded Best on Ground.
The final scoreboard read Monbulk 5.13.43 to Silvan 1.9.15.
Monbulk Football Club president Case Broekhof said although the weather conditions were extremely bad the Hawks had been on top all season and deserved to win the premiership.
“When it is all said and done it was a great effort on the day and both sides showed tremendous courage and determination,” Mr Broekhof said.
