MONBULK College students were on a roll on Tuesday 2 August as they prepared for the school’s interhouse lawn bowls competition in October.
Twelve students attended the lawn bowls’ practice session hosted by Monbulk Bowling Club, in preparation for October’s showdown, which will see the school’s four houses battle it out.
Monbulk Bowling Club president Alan Dobie said the competition was in its second year, with last year’s winners the green house.
Mr Dobie said this year was the first time the club offered students a chance to practise for several weeks before the competition.
He said student numbers had risen in recent weeks, and linked the increasing popularity to exposure of the sport, particularly on television.
“More and more younger people are taking up this sport which is not dangerous, has a distinct social flavour and is inexpensive to play,” Mr Dobie said.
“The popularity of bowls has received a boost recently with the release of the movie Crackerjack, and exposure on the ABC on Saturday afternoons.”
Mr Dobie said several students had joined the Monbulk club since last year’s tournament.
Monbulk College Health and Physical Education teacher Rose Carn said about 30 students would participate in the October tournament.
She said the sport operated at a slower pace than most young people were accustomed to, and that it taught them patience, and social etiquette when conversing with more senior club members.
