A MAJOR makeover is set to get underway at Upper Ferntree Gully Primary after the school received confirmation of government funds.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood announced a $900,000 Commonwealth Government grant on Thursday, 10 November.
The federal cash combines with a recently confirmed state injection of more than $2 million for the school.
“The Commonwealth Grant is part of an overall cost of $3.1 million for the construction of general purpose classrooms, library, staff and administration area, canteen, first aid room and student amenities.
“It also includes an upgrade of general purpose classrooms,” Mr Wood said.
Mr Wood said the new facilities would help the school provide the best possible learning environment for the students.
The funding was initially pledged as part of the May budget but the school has been awaiting the green light after the project was put out to tender.
Upper Ferntree Gully Primary principal David Rose said the renovation was a ‘tremendous boost’ for the building which, at more than 40 years of age, was looking ‘tired and rundown’. “I think it’s going to make a tremendous difference,” he said.
“We’ll be quite a landmark in Upper Ferntree Gully with some spacious classes and clean, bright new toilets, and some really great working spaces for staff and students alike.”
