THE Ranges Community Music School (RCMS) welcomed its new maestro of the strings this month, celebrating the arrival of renowned orchestral journeyman Craig Nankervis.
Mr Nankervis’ appointment as full-time strings teacher was last week hailed as an important win for the school.
“We are very fortunate to have a teacher of Craig’s calibre,” RCMS director Maggie Duncan said.
“He played full-time in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and has played with all the major Australian orchestras, but I’m particularly pleased that Craig’s had a lot of experience teaching and arranging music for schools.”
Having spent much of his professional life on tour, Mr Nankervis said he is happy to jump off the musical merry-go-round.
“I am devoted to teaching now and settling in Melbourne with my young family,” he said.
As an added bonus for the RCMS, the appointment will allow it to again offer scholarships for strings students.
These will provide school-aged students with the free loan of an instrument – such as a viola, cello or double bass – for an entire year.
As part of the scholarship program, the students will be expected to enrol in lessons at RCMS and play in the Ranges Young Strings orchestra when their skills allow it.
