REIGNING SEABL champions Knox are ready to defend their title with an opening round clash against new team Southern Districts this Saturday night at Knox Converse Stadium.
Showcasing a mix of their 2006 championship team, together with some excellent recruits and classy juniors, the Raiders will only be missing second import John Bryant when they clash with the Spartans.
Expecting a big crowd to witness the unfurling of last season’s championship banner, Raiders coach Damian Cotter can’t wait for the title defence to begin.
“Last season was my first championship as a coach, and now as title holders I’m entering new territory again, which is exciting,” said Cotter.
“I’m very happy with the squad and think we can make some further progress this year, especially with the number of local kids coming through the ranks.”
Unsure of what to expect from the Spartans, Cotter admits that his coaching staff might be forced to change things up during the game and hopefully gather momentum the longer the match goes on.
“It’s always hard forming a game-plan against a new team, so we’ll need to respect every player and adapt to what the Spartans present on the night.”
The night will start with an anticipated showdown between the Raiders and Spartans in the women’s competition, where new Raider Andrea McMahon will play her first official game for Knox.
In a number of solid practice matches in recent weeks, McMahon has teamed with stalwart Julia Tan to form a lethal guard combination that is expected to warrant plenty of respect.
Knox chairman Bill Fenton is also looking forward to the season starting and is pleased the long wait to round one is almost over.
“The off-season hasn’t been any longer than normal, but when you’re coming off such a successful year you just want to get the players back out on court and the fans back in the stands,” said Fenton.
“The community really has a strong affinity with the Raiders and the players appreciate that. I have no doubt the support our men and women receive lifts them that extra bit every time they play at home.”
This Saturday’s action at Knox Converse Stadium in Boronia starts at 6pm with the women’s game, followed by the men’s at 8pm. Entry is $5 for adults, $2 for children and $10 for a family.
