SCOUT groups throughout the hills and foothills have been celebrating the centenary of Scouts Australia.
John Surridge of the 1st Monbulk Scout Group said scouting groups across the nation were given 10 scarves to present to community groups to mark 100 years of scouting in Australia.
Mr Surridge presented a scarf to the town’s RSL sub-branch president, Ted Beard.
He said the scarves were to be presented to groups that had shown their support of the scout movement.
“Monbulk RSL has been a great support to us,” he said.
Mr Surridge said the scout group would be making more scarf presentations in the next few months.
The Scouts of Knox devoted a week in early April to the centenary scarf celebrations.
The group presented scarves to a number of organisations and members of the community who had contributed to the local community or had contributed to the success of scouts.
The recipients were asked to wear their scarf during the week to show the community their support for scouting.
Knox Scouts District Commissioner Tony McTackett said more than 100 people in Knox were presented with a scarf.
“There was a fantastic response,” he said.
Mr McTackett said recipients included Knox councillors, local MPs, police and CFA representatives, bank managers and local business figures as well as key support people from a selection of Knox’s 15 scout groups.
The scarf-up week concluded with a fun activity day at Caribbean Gardens which included a presentation to Caribbean Gardens manager and former scout David Spooner.
“The giant slingshot and the sumo wrestling were among the favourite activities, with the abseiling tower being well used on the day,” Mr McTackett said.
Tecoma Primary School principal Rohan Thompson was presented with a scarf by Deputy District Leader Martin Coad, Upwey Cub Scouts Leader Bruce Gaulke and his son George.
Mr Thompson reflected on his time as a scout and proudly wore the scarf for the day.
