THE people of Gembrook can now get excited about the town’s history following the launch of a new panoramic display.
A map of the town’s historic walk and a treasure hunt for children has also been launched.
The display commemorates the lives of townspeople since the first settlers and the historic walk maps show how the town centre has changed over the years.
Maps are now available from all tourism-based businesses in the town’s main street. The treasure hunt has been designed for local children and includes a wide range of information on nature and the environment.
A group of volunteers spent the past 12 months researching the town’s history, holding public meetings, interviewing residents and collecting photographs from as far back as the 1800s to put the display together.
Charlene Hoseman, the project team manager, said the display will generate community pride in the town’s colourful past and will provide some exciting activities for visitors who are interested in history.
Ms Hoseman said Gembrook is unique because it has a rich history of more than 150 years in mining, timber milling, farming and tourism.
“As more and more tourists are attracted to our beautiful area, we hope that, by capturing the town’s unique history, we will ensure their visit is more enjoyable and worthwhile,” she said.
