SHIRE of Yarra Ranges’ new graffiti kits were on show at Upwey High School last Thursday.
A kit containing brushes, gloves, a bucket, cloth, goggles, graffiti removal fluid and instructions will be sent to each school throughout the shire in an effort to tackle graffiti.
“Graffiti should be removed as soon as it appears, not only to prevent the graffiti from bleeding into the surface material but also to reduce the exposure of the graffitist’s work,” Melba Ward councillor Terry Avery said.
The kits are funded through a $40,000 Department of Justice grant and will also be available free of charge to businesses and residents.
Vouchers for free paint for residents who have graffiti are available from the shire’s Community Links or by contacting the council’s graffiti officer on 1300 368 333.
In February this year the Mail reported graffiti in Upwey was out of control after the second attack in three weeks on Upwey and District Community Bank.
The shire is spending $200,000 a year on fighting graffiti.
