Survived horror crash

By Tania Martin
RAY Wilson still can’t believe his luck after walking away from a high-speed crash with just a few cuts and bruises.
The crash happened shortly after 3pm on Thursday 24 October.
The 71-year-old Monbulk man was just eight kilometres from home when the accident happened.
Mr Wilson was travelling along Monbulk-Silvan Road just before Queens Road when a car travelling in the opposite direction lost control.
He said the motorist was attempting to overtake several vehicles turning right into Queens Road when the accident happened.
“He hit the gravel and it sent his car into a fishtail,” Mr Wilson said.
The motorist lost control and crashed into the driver’s side of Mr Wilson’s car.
“His car hit the gravel and headed straight for me…I had a moment to blink and thought this was it, I’m dead,” he said.
Mr Wilson said both cars were travelling in excess of 70km/h.
He braced himself for the impact as his life flashed before his eyes.
“I thought I was gone.”
After the shock of the impact, Mr Wilson recovered to find he was still alive.
“I looked through the windscreen and was amazed everything was still intact,” he said.
“I had a blood nose from the airbag, and my chest hurt from the seatbelt but I was still alive.”
Mr Wilson said his seatbelt saved his life.
Even now, three weeks later, Mr Wilson is still counting his lucky stars.
He was also amazed at how many people came to his aid.
An off-duty nurse, a truck driver and a local woman all stopped to help and stayed with Mr Wilson until an ambulance arrived.
He was transported to Maroondah Hospital for observation but was later discharged.
Mr Wilson was grateful to those who stopped to help.
“They were so good to see if I was all right,” he said.
