Zero tolerance

By Tania Martin
MOTORISTS have been warned of a zero tolerance policy for speeding and drink driving this summer.
The State Government last week joined forces with police in an effort to combat the growing road toll.
Road Minister Tim Pallas last week introduced a number of tough new initiatives.
He said despite Victoria recording the lowest road toll in five years, 272 people had still lost their lives.
“As we approach the summer months, traditionally the most dangerous on our roads, we are seeking to introduce measure for tougher enforcement to crack down on motorists who are still disobeying road rules,” Mr Pallas.
Statistics show that 30 per cent of fatal accidents are caused by speed, which equates to 100 lives each year.
Increased police manpower over the Christmas and New Year period will be out in force on roads.
Mr Pallas said Victoria Police would increase its mobile camera program, targeting high risk crash areas.
Police will also be working to combat deaths caused by people not wearing seatbelts or by talking on mobile phones while driving.
Mr Pallas said 18 per cent of all driver and passenger fatalities were the result of someone not wearing a seatbelt.
“Penalties for talking on a phone or not wearing a seatbelt will be increased from 1.35 to 2 penalty points or from $153 to $226,” he said.
