Jones leads way for Mount Evelyn

MOUNT Evelyn put points on the board as the Yarra Valley Cricket Association’s D. J. Strachan Shield began round seven on the weekend.
Playing Gruyere District at Gruyere, it dismissed the home side for 100, with Matt Tilney scoring 50. Bowling honours for Mount Evelyn were shared by Chris Anderson, with 3/25, and Kane Jones, whose 5/34 included a hat-trick.
In reply, Mount Evelyn was 7/170 at stumps, with Jones contributing 70 and Ash Bryans unbeaten on 34. Tilney took 2 /34 and Matt Cooper 2/44 for Gruyere District.
The match at Silvan was curtailed by more than 15 overs due to rain, with Silvan 5/124 at day’s end against Warburton-Millgrove, Clint Sharman top scoring with 59.
Hoddles Creek batted first at home against Wandin and reached 123, with Simon Davis making 38. Shane Luck (5/47) and Simon Young (4/30) did the damage with the ball for the visitors, who in reply were 0/5.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy, Yarra Glen travelled to Mount Evelyn and made first use of the wicket but could only manage 138. Lyle Merrett scored 27 as Ian Hawkey took 5/47. Mount Evelyn, in reply, was 0/44, with Mal Darvell on 40.
