A UNITED council is the goal of new Knox mayor David Cooper.
Councillors turned to the Scott Ward stalwart and former mayor to lead the largely inexperienced team at the council’s statutory meeting last Tuesday (9 December).
“Being elected mayor is truly a privilege, a humbling one that I take with a deep sense of gratefulness,” Cr Cooper said.
As one of three re-elected councillors, the new mayor has his work cut out for him showing six new representatives the ropes.
“New councillors bring fresh energy and a renewed vision,” Cr Cooper said.
“What I see as mayor is we’ve got to bring everyone’s opinions together and the collective wishes of the electorates.”
Cr Cooper previously served as mayor in 2005/06.
New Baird Ward councillor Peter Cole unveiled the motto he would follow during the next four years.
“It’s ‘with the community, for the community’,” he said.
“The people of Knox are the reason I’m here.”
Cr Cole said he never dreamed he would be delivering a councillor acceptance speech six months ago.
“To say it’s a privilege is truly an understatement,” he said.
“It’s a gift of trust.”
Chandler Ward’s John Mortimore said the new council shared a vision for Knox.
“We all have the same destination in mind,” he said.
Cr Mortimore predicted a long journey ahead.
“It’s going to take a long time to find my feet,” he said.
“I’m very proud and honoured to be elected to this position.”
Dobson Ward councillor Sue McMillan said her new role was a great honour, “and a responsibility I take very seriously”.
“We’re a mix of individuals with immense experience in a wide range of areas,” she said.
A nervous Andrew Walter said sports facilities, youth, safety, appropriate development and planning topped his priority list.
“Public speaking is not my strength,” he said.
“But getting out in the community is.”
The new Friberg Ward councillor also welcomed Cr Cooper to the mayoralty.
“As a fellow Richmond supporter, I’m sure you can be trusted,” he said.
Cr Cooper has vowed to unveil a statue of Matthew Richardson on Stud Road “when the mighty Tigers win the 2009 Grand Final”.
“Don’t think I’m joking,” he said.
