Memories of Alex

By Tania Martin
IN A poignant farewell, more than 150 people gathered to rememberAlex Webb, on what would have been his 13th birthday last Sunday.
The rising Sherbrooke Ranges Soccer star’s life was tragically cut short last July following a BMX accident.
Alex died from loss of blood, after he landed awkwardly on his handlebars.
Monbulk was rocked by the death of Alex, who touched so many in his short life.
In the final chapter of this tragedy, the Webbs invited family, friends and the local community to celebrate the life of their ‘beautiful boy’.
More than 150 people gathered at Baynes Park Reserve, one of Alex’s favourite haunts, for a barbecue lunch.
Alex’s idol and Melbourne Victory player, Danny Alsopp also attended the event to honour the rising star.
Messages of happy birthday were written on balloons and released into the sky.
The day also gave people the chance to visit the memorial garden and park bench that had been established in Alex’s honour.
It sits within reach of his favourite soccer pitch and is just down the road from the family home.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges donated the tribute.
Alex’s mother, Karen said her son would have loved the party.
“He loved it here (Baynes Park) it was his home ground … the kids would always come down here but it wasn’t just about soccer – it was just home to him,” she said.
Mrs Webb said the garden was a place where Alex would always be and people could go to be near him.
Alex’s father Leo said the party was a time for healing and celebration for not only the family but also the community.
“His life touched so many,” he said.
