Win in road speed battle

TWO hills towns have won a hard-fought battle to reduce speed limits.
Yarra Ranges Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn said the limits in Kallista and Sassafras would be lowered from 60 to 50km/h.
She said it was great to see the limits being lowered after all this time.
“Traffic throughout the Dandenongs has greatly increased over the past few years and both townships are extremely popular with tourists,” Cr Dunn said. “We have been calling for this for some time … it’s great to know our calls have been heeded.”
In Kallista new speed signs will be installed along three busy roads, Kallista-Emerald, Monbulk and Sassafras roads.
Signs will also be installed along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Mountain Highway in Sassafras.
Senior traffic engineer Kevin Kalwig said the shire had now fought for the reduction of speed in 12 townships.
But he said there were still 11 more that needed reducing.
Cr Dunn said the council would continue to lobby for lower limits in those towns, including Selby.
