A GROUP of hills women last week described shaving their hair off as ‘liberating’.
They have collected in excess of $9,000 as a part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual fund-raiser – The World’s Greatest Shave.
The shave gives all Australian’s the chance to support those who suffer from leukaemia, lymphoma and Myeloma.
For Emerald’s Diane Robinson, 44, and her son Matthew, 15, taking the plunge last Thursday, 12 March was all about supporting a family friend.
One of Ms Robinson’s closest friends is battling cancer and knows all about losing her hair.
“We wanted to do something to help,” she said.
“It’s weird not having any hair, and cold…it’s absolutely liberating.”
Ms Robinson said it was unclear how much they had raised and was still calling for donations to be made at Emerald Lake Travel, in Main Street.
A group of Ranges Community Health workers’ also sacrificed their locks for the cause.
Known as team Shavarange, a number of the group shaved and coloured their hair.
Team leader Tania Williams said the group had taken the plunge to support a co-worker who was suffering from leukaemia.
“We wanted to do something to help – to contribute somehow,” she said.
Ms Williams said she never expected to receive so much support.
So far Shavarange has collected more than $9,000 towards the cause.
“We just wanted to get some money raised … we were surprised by all the donations,” Ms Williams said.
“It has been amazing. Even people we don’t know have given us money.”
Ms Williams also described shaving her hair off as ‘liberating’ after having long hair all her life.
