MORNINGTON Peninsula rockers Kisschasy are keen to hit the road.
The band, best known for hits Do Do’s and Whoa-ohs, Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm at Night and Spray On Pants will head to Ferntree Gully next month to promote its third album, Seizures.
Bass player Joel Vanderuit told the Mail that months of recording and rehearsing had taken their toll.
“It’s been so long since we’ve toured properly,” he said.
Vanderuit, drummer Karl Ammitzboll, lead singer Darren Cordeux and guitarist Sean Thomas are looking forward to their Ferntree Gully Hotel return.
“We really feel appreciated there,” Vanderuit said.
“We’re keen to get among it and have a good time with everyone.”
Vanderuit said the chilled out “slacker sort of vibe” on Seizures would translate to the stage.
“There’s a lot more room to breathe in the shows,” he said.
The band recorded the album with indie-rock producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Powderfinger, The Vines) in Los Angeles earlier this year.
Its pop sound is a step away from the band’s grunge roots, displayed on debut album United Paper People and follow-up Hymns for the Nonbeliever, but trademark catchy lyrics and guitar-driven hooks remain.
Vanderuit said feedback since the album’s 21 August release had been positive.
“It’s probably going to upset some people,” he said.
“But we can’t play the same songs forever. We’ve never, ever written songs for anyone else.”
He said the sound was likely to expand the band’s fan base.
“I don’t think it’s very different, just not as immediate,” he said.
“It needs an extra listen. It challenges people that tiny bit.”
He hoped this would translate into longevity. “All my favourite albums have been growers,” he said.
“If it’s immediate people tend to get over it a week or two later.”
“Grungy rock ‘n’ roll kind of band” Regular John will join Kisschasy for the tour along with local acts for the Ferntree Gully bill on Friday 9 October.
Tickets are $28 and available from the venue at 1130 Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully, www.ferntreegullyhotel.com.au or by calling 9758 6544.
