Guides display birthday badges

By Tania Martin
MONBULK youngsters recently joined thousands of girls from across the country in a campout to celebrate 100 years of girl guides.
They travelled to Queensland for the three-day camp known as Lets Celebrate.
Girl Guides was originally conceived at a Crystal Palace Rally, which was held by a number of boy scouts in London on 4 September 1909. Eight girls calling themselves the Wolf Patrol also joined the march in a bid to start a similar group for girls and have been operating ever since.
The Monbulk Guides have spent the past six months fundraising for the trip to Queensland with sausage sizzles and biscuit drives.
They kick-started their weekend with a campfire on 4 September and took part in numerous activities over the weekend that involved plenty of bubbles.
Monbulk Guides’ Margaret Brooks said 2010 has been declared the Year of the Girl Guide and the Monbulk troupe had plenty of exciting events planned.
The group also has a number of vacancies available for girls between 7 and 18 years old.
Anyone interested in joining should contact Margaret on 9756 7098 or Lucy on 9735 9909.
