COMMUTERS could soon find it easier to swap their cars for public transport with the squeeze on parking set to be eased at Lilydale train station.
This comes as the State Government announced the completion of the station’s car park extension.
Eastern Transport Coalition chairwoman and Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn said it would be a great boost for the station.
Cr Dunn said Lilydale was one of the many car parks under extreme pressure.
“Commuters have been forced to park in local streets or further down the line… it will ease a bit of the pressure there,” Cr Dunn said.
Public Transport Parliamentary Secretary Brian Tee said the upgrades were a great investment in Lilydale’s future.
“We (State Government) have boosted parking and security so people feel safe leaving their car at the station when they jump on the train,” he said.
The upgrade includes 67 new parking spaces to adjoin the north-west section of the existing area increasing it to 467 spaces.
It has also opened up an additional 25 bicycle spots which would be accessed through the Parkiteer bike cage.
Mr Tee said this investment in car parking had recognised the changing attitudes of commuters and the ‘booming’ patronage of the public transport system.
Safety also received a boost with new digital Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed.
