WILD weather in the hills last Thursday brought out the best in residents.
An Upwey resident contacted the Mail to praise the efforts of local arborists who came to the aid of drivers trapped in Ternes Road.
Strong winds blew over a large tree which fell across the dead-end street about 11am.
An arborist came across the tree before emergency services could arrive and called his colleague off a paying job to help him remove it.
“They cleared the road and went back on their way,” the Upwey woman said.
“Ternes Road gets a lot of local traffic and is a dead end road, so there were several cars waiting to get out.”
A Kallista family narrowly missed losing their water and sewerage tanks when a tree crushed part of their verandah on Wednesday night.
They were asleep inside the home at the time.
The Emerald SES unit was among the busiest crews following strong wind gusts on Wednesday night and Thursday, which peaked at 96 kilometres per hour at Mount Dandenong.
Volunteers received more than 60 callouts to clear trees from roadways and driveways and to assist with damaged vehicles, homes and other property.
Their busiest period was between 10am Wednesday and 1pm Thursday.
