Times to shrine

By Casey Neill
BELGRAVE Library will this month host a historical tribute to Victoria’s most recognisable memorial.
The History of the Shrine Travelling Exhibition will spend five weeks at the library from 12 July.
It shows the history of Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance from its inception in 1921 and features plans and sketches for future underground galleries at the site.
Archives, newspapers and personal collections of images collected during more than 80 years will be on display to explain the critical role the shrine has played in Victoria’s social history.
Two audio visuals, including original footage from 1934 and 1954, help the exhibition connect all Victorians to the shrine and inform young and old of its history, significance and future direction.
Shrine trustees chairman John Taylor said he hoped the exhibition would engage with the Dandenong Ranges community.
“Especially those who may not otherwise be able to visit the shrine,” he said.
“It is our aim to encourage current and future generations to appreciate the role of the shrine in honouring the service and sacrifice of Victorian servicemen and women.” The exhibition brings to light the importance and impact of Victorians at war and in peacekeeping, and chronicles some of the state’s most enduring and changing times.
Shrine CEO Denis Baguley and Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn will officially open the exhibition at 10am on 14 July.
Belgrave Library is located in Reynolds Lane, Belgrave, and can be contacted on 9754 7266.
It is open from 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 8pm Thursday and 1pm Saturday.
