Curious in many ways

MOUNT Dandenong Primary School students have brought a curious wonderland to life on stage.
Grade 6 students presented Curiouser and Curiouser, based loosely on Lewis Caroll’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, at Farndons Hall in Kalorama last Thursday and Friday.
Teacher Trish Becker directed and produced the show, which followed Alice after her return from Wonderland.
Jackson, 12, lit up the stage as the red queen in a floor length dress, make-up and high heels.
“I feel like it’s easy to play, but a lot of people laugh at me,” he said.
“I’m glad I’m not a girl though, with all the make-up and hair.”
Principal Mike Leonard said it was the first time the school’s major production was held away from the school grounds, due to the Building the Education Revolution construction.
“It’s been a really nice link with the community,” he said.
All Grade 6 students have roles on stage and have spent 15 weeks mastering their characters.
The production is part of their media studies unit. They’ve even volunteered to bring the show together during lunchtime.
Parents have helped with make-up and costumes, and three Grade 5 students took care of the sound and lighting.
“They’ll have a head start for next year’s production,” Mr Leonard said.
Sell-out audiences have flocked to the show. Ticket sales raise some money for the school, but Mr Leonard said they were happy to just break even.
“But it’s more about a community event,” he said.
