ASPIRING junior firefighters blasted their way through a series of challenges during the Kalorama Fun Day at Kalorama Oval on 24 October.
Eighteen teams containing more than 80 budding young firefighters competed alongside 40 leaders and about 100 family and friends.
Teams competed in events such as hose bowling, the turnout challenge, and dry and wet target competitions.
The juniors were aged from 11 to 16 and trained throughout the year in the lead-up to the event.
Emerald Junior Fire Brigade co-ordinator and senior firefighter Trevor Ireland said: “The juniors learn almost all aspects of being a senior firefighter so when they reach 16 they can step right up, complete the six months training and become a firefighter ready to attend fire calls.”
The Kallista junior brigade came out on top during the fun day, winning two of the five events.
“A great day was had by all, thanks to support from Montrose Rotary who supplied the trophies and badges and Monbulk fire brigade auxiliary who catered during the event,” Mr Ireland said.
“Anyone whose son or daughter is interested in joining the junior fire brigade should call their local fire brigade.
“I’m sure they’ll be glad to take them on board.”
Challenge is a blast
