Dumped donations cost charity

UNWANTED donations dumped outside Upwey’s Treasure Shop are taking money away from those in need.
Management committee secretary Brian Broughton said someone last month left a double bed base and mattress, four-seater modular settee, foam plastic single mattress, round plastic table and battered bar fridge outside the shop after staff had closed up for the day.
“Despite the large signs asking people not to deposit goods there outside shop hours,” he said.
“The Treasure Shop welcomes most donations but not this sort.
“Anyone with any understanding of the shop would see that it is just too small to accommodate goods of this size.”
The ‘donation’ cost the shop $75 to be taken to the tip.
“As well as the time and effort of one of the men associated with the shop,” Mr Broughton said.
“That is $75 that now is not available for distribution to organisations in our community.”
Mr Broughton said CCTV cameras captured the dumping and helped identify those responsible.
“We have notified the police on this occasion and trust these people will be more discriminating in what they donate in the future,” he said.
Treasure Shop has raised more than $122,000 in the past 13 years to distribute to community organisations, support aid projects and Uniting Church missions.
“The management committee of the Treasure Shop are very thankful for all the community support it receives, both the buying of goods and donations of goods,” Mr Broughton said.
