A PENSIONER from Narre Warren said he felt he had been deceived after opening his rates notice last week.
Harry, who asked that his last name not be used, said he expected his rates to increase 5.9 per cent, but was shocked to learn he had to pay 8.43 per cent more than last year due to the garbage levy.
“It’s fully deceptive. When I looked into why it was so much, I saw the garbage charge had gone up $40. Rates have also increased because of the fiasco in,” he said.
“I am a pensioner and can’t afford that. It’s absolutely outrageous.”
But City of Casey chief executive officer Mike Tyler said the details of the rate increase and waste service charges were communicated in a public notice placed by the council, and in the information brochure accompanying the rates notice.
“Upon receipt of their rates notice, council is encouraging residents to review this information to familiarise themselves with the charges,” Mr Tyler said.
Mr Tyler said the annual waste service charge was separate to the rates, and was charged to reflect the actual costs of waste management.
“Across Melbourne, the cost of waste treatment and management is increasing disproportionately to other costs as landfills are filled, waste has to be transported further, the EPA waste levy increases, landfill rehabilitation standards increase and alternative waste treatments are mandated by government.”
Ratepayers who have difficult financial circumstances are encouraged to call the Casey Council on 9705 5200 in advance of any due rate payment to discuss alternative arrangements.
