Firies saluted

By Lilly O’Gorman
LOCAL CFA volunteers were recognised for the sacrifices they made to protect lives and property during the 2009 Black Saturday fires.
Country Fire Authority CEO Mick Bourke presented badges and certificates to each brigade from throughout Casey and Cardinia at a pre-season briefing for the region last Thursday.
Mr Bourke said, after a period of grieving and healing for the community, it was time to formally acknowledge the firies.
“We feel the time is now right. So, on behalf of the Country Fire Authority, I thank you for your dedication, sacrifice and ongoing contribution to the safety of the Victorian community,” he said.
“The 2009 bushfires are etched in the memories of so many CFA members, and it is important to show that we appreciate the incredible efforts of our people during that time.
“Unfortunately, many members lost family, friends and work colleagues in the fires.
“A number of members also lost their homes.
“All of our members were deeply affected in one way or another.”
Mr Bourke presented CFA members from region eight with a pin featuring the symbolic yellow ribbon, at the presentation held at Monash Univeristy, Berwick.
“The campaign pin and brigade certificates are small tokens of recognition for the CFA men and women who made incredible sacrifices to help their community during Black Saturday, many risking their own safety to help others,” he said.
“It is vital that everyone’s dedication and contribution is recognised, especially given the enormity of the challenges faced, the might and effort to protect lives and property CFA members displayed, and the tragic impacts recorded in many communities.
