English dominance in Over-60s

By David Nagel
CASEY Fields will today (Thursday 1 December) play host to the sixth and final test match between the Australian and English Over-60s cricket teams.
President of the Victorian Over-60s Cricket Association and tour leader Rob Wilson said the tour had been a success, despite the English dominating the series.
“We haven’t got over the line yet; we had a tie in the first test, but since then the English have been too good,” he said.
“It’s very competitive over there; they have 30 counties competing, split into five different regions whereas here in Australia it’s a lot more social.”
“The world’s most experienced cricketers” as Wilson likes to call them started their battles on English soil in August this year and this is a reciprocal tour that is currently taking place.
Local players to take part in the series are Beaconsfield’s John Scales and Pakenham Upper’s Bob Phillips, Scales is an emergency for today’s test while Phillips will take his place in the starting XI.
Wilson is part of a group trying to expand the ‘Overs’ concept throughout Australia.
“We’re still trying to get a national body together; Western Australia is the only state not involved at the moment, so we are getting there; the players love this type of cricket,” he said.
Today’s game starts at 11am and will be followed by a function put on by the City of Casey to mark the conclusion of the tour. City of Casey caps have been made to be presented to the English squad at the function.
