Petition gets skates on

EIGHTY Mount Evelyn residents have launched a petition to close the skate park on Birmingham Road.
Near-by residents say they have had problems with the skate park since before it officially opened in the middle of last year.
They say it is too close to houses, its users are too noisy and it is a magnet for graffiti. But skate park advocate Billanook Ward councillor Tim Heenan said he will fight the campaign.
The Yarra Ranges Council had originally approved the Birmingham Road site, which was overturned by VCAT in 2008.
Councillors then made the decision to ignore the ruling and approve the skate park in 2010, before it was officially opened in July last year.
Mr Heenan said he was surprised by the petition and maintained his support for the park.
“We have waited so long to get it here, and I’m a bit dumbfounded, but we will not be closing it down,” he said.
