A WOMAN was lucky to escape major injuries after her car rolled from across Mt Dandenong Tourist Road in Sassafras and bowled her over just before hitting a shop last Thursday.
Police from Olinda, Belgrave and Monbulk received the call at about 2.30pm and arrived to find the front of the car resting against broken panels of the Dalcheri Natural Fibres shopfront.
It is believed the 48-year-old East Kew woman, who was selling books to shops in the area, had parked her car and walked away for about an hour before coming back and being struck by the car, stunning witnesses.
Leading Senior Constable Tim Wall from Olinda Police Station said the car rolled about 40 metres down and across the road.
“It was parallel parked on the other side of the wall and collided with her at the same time it collided with the wall,” he said.
“The woman received minor injuries and was quite shocked and sore.”
Police believe the car was not placed in park and the handbrake may not have been engaged at the time of the accident, which also caused damage to multiple panels of the woman’s car.
Ldg Sen Const Wall said the shop avoided significant structural damage.
He urged motorists to always ensure their car was left on park with the handbrake on.
“It is important when parking in the hills to ensure that your vehicle is secured,” he said.
“It was lucky more people weren’t injured in this instance.”
