FAILING to give up, anti-maccas protesters once again hit the streets on the weekend making their opposition to the fast food chain known.
More than 100 people marched from Belgrave to Tecoma on Sunday to support the “Tecoma 8” who face civil action by McDonald’s.
Demolition works on the site are expected to start again this week, but protesters say they will do all in their power to stop them.
The works were stopped last month after the union feared workers on the site were not going into a safe working area, but WorkSafe Victoria spokesperson said WorkSafe had investigated claims about worksite safety.
“WorkSafe has visited the site a number of times this week to ensure work is being carried out safely, and is satisfied with current work practices,” she said.
“WorkSafe will continue to monitor work on the site as well as continue discussions with the company to ensure they are aware of their health and safety obligations.”
A McDonald’s Australia spokesperson confirmed that the works on the site would continue but could not confirm an exact date.
“We respect people’s right to protest provided they do so in a safe, peaceful and lawful manner,” the spokesperson said.”We’ve got an approved planning permit which was the result of following due legal process and we have a great franchisee who is from the area and is about to create 100 local jobs, provide accredited training and work experience.
“He is looking forward to not only providing opportunities to this local staff but also making a contribution to the community.”
