YOUNG people with special needs are on the road thanks to an initiative which encourages Emerald residents to share transport.
The four students are able to attend cooking classes at Jamie’s Ministry of Food in Packenham through the Share the Ride initiative.
The program, organised by Emerald Community House, encourages locals to share their cars with other people heading in the same direction.
“Ride sharing has many great benefits for the community, particularly for people with little or no access to public or private transport and those with limited mobility,” Emerald Community House co-ordinator Lynne Trensky said.
Ms Trensky said the program is useful because of Emerald’s limited public transport.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen praised the program for reducing car emissions, decreasing traffic demands and giving people a chance to connect.
“It’s very cost effective and great for the environment,” Cr Owen said.
Emerald Community House teacher Sharyn Thomas will provide the four students with a ride to their cooking class.
“I often give the students a lift to classes and to the Dig-In Cafe and local disco.
“I’m happy to do it because it makes their lives fulfilling and fun,” Ms Thomas said.
Residents can collect free Emerald Share the Ride bumper stickers, calico bags and ride sharing fact sheets from Emerald Community House, Emerald U3A and Emerald Library.
